To My Exemplar

I was asked to draw a man
and I drew a stick figure.
Without your face, I couldn’t guess
a mental image at its best.
I was asked then to fancy
living a life assuredly free.
Without your guard, I wouldn’t feel
sweet immurement behind steel.
I was asked to define next
my ideal married man.
Without ado, I labeled you,
an exemplar;  devoted; true.
I made this poem for my husband.
